This is an attempt to translate our song "Qué difícil es hablar el español", for any non-Spanish speakers who might want to know what are we talking about.

and also that in spanish every word is pronounced as the written one but in english it's not like that. Sooo in conclusion I thing each language has its pros and cons :D

Yeah, it is just that the video is a little bit misleading, sure is funny but if you travel through different countries where they speak Spanish just do not use slangs. In El Salvador they will understand if you say "perro" and in argentina they will understand if you say "carcel" you do not have to say "chucho"

+Nilguiri you are right I looked for it and it's not Slangs thanks for the observation. My bad +kabutotakashi I have no doubt Spanish has been simplified too and there are words that are not in use anymore, but I have the impression English has been simplified more than other languages. Is far more difficult to learn Spanish and other languages like German or French than English.

Well I'm Spanish and I've got to tell you that the old Spanish is quite difficult to read, to understand either, because it's not due to the slangs, it's because every word has transformed itself in the way it's written and also in the way it is said. There was a huge change from the Latin to the old Spanish and eventually to the current language. Nowadays, even though I'm from Spain I wouldn't manage to read the ancient novels in old Spanish because it's a whole new language the one that we use in these days. I don't know about other countries, I can only speak from my experience. Nevertheless, I assumed it may kind of happened in the same way or maybe not I don't know XD Anyway, as for me it, obviously, is hard to speak or express myself in English since it's not my first language. I can tell for sure that I learn more English watching series, films, reading books and you know being here with you guys than in school ;) Ahh! Question! How on earth do you ( I mean the ones whose first language is English) know all the meanings of the pharal verbs that's a thing that here in Spain we don't have us much as you do. It freaks me out! Every time I read a book, watch series I come across with new phrasal verbs it's like OMG there are so so many hehehe Okay, I'm afraid I might have bored you a little. Sorry! Lots of kisses

I am also a native Spanish speaker and the only thing I found difficult in English is irregular verbs and the pronunciation of some words. But grammar is relatively easy. I guess you right and Spanish in the past when it wasn't divorced from Latin was also really difficult. We could even said it was almost a different language.

Habla Español? I often get asked: "do people from one spanish-speaking country understand people from another?" (spanish-speaking country) The question could sound naive, but is actually justified considering that, for example, in the "german speaking area" alone you have so many different languages and dialects. I can attest to the fact that a northern and southern german can not understand each other if each of them speaks in their own dialect (similar for swiss-german, or austrian-dialects, etc.) So usually I answer with "Of course! There are just some subtle differences to take into account, some different expressions, words, pronunciations, that's all.... little details. We understand each other just fine!". Well... these guys here beg to differ big time!!! And they do so in a most funny, brilliant, talented and creative way! (If you speak spanish... enjoy! If you don't... hope you can read the subtitles fast enough, but better yet... learn spanish... or maybe don't ;-)

No actually it is weird since for example on TV they have to standardize the spanish so people from all Latin America will understand each other on TV, since if they didnt do it, nobody would understand each other pretty well... Something like what happens with Australian, Brittish and US english... For us it is easy to understand US english but it almost impossible to understand someone from Melbourne if speaking with idioms and slangs...

I was talking with a friend that was from mexico, and i asked her for a "cola" (in el salvador, you can use it to mean 'hair band'), but she suddenly started laughing so hard and i was really confused, but she told me afterwards that in mexico, 'cola' mostly means 'ass'. "Cola" has a lot of meanings, even in el salvador, like 'line' or 'tail', but depending on context, it changes. She told me that they never use 'cola', but instead 'donita' (i dont remember if that's the exact word, its been a while) for 'hair band' XD

¡JAJAJAJ! Por ejemplo, en Venezuela decimos "Hay mucha cola", cuando hay muchas personas haciendo una fila o cuando hay tráfico. También decimos "Dame la cola", cuando le pedimos a alguien que nos lleve en su carro hasta algún sitio. Y sí, aquí también le decimos "Cola" a las ligas para agarrarse el cabello.

Como en otras partes, en Chile "cola" es una fila o línea de personas, la cola de los perros o el trasero de las personas. Pero también se dice que alguien "es cola" si es homosexual, palabra que viene de "loca" con las sílabas invertidas.

It is FACTUALLY known that spanish is one of the EASIEST languages on Earth to learn. The fact that I'M fluent in it is proof enough. The only people that THINK it's hard are those that are from spanish speaking counties. I guess it's regional pride.

The only thing easy about spanish is that most of the words are pronounced as they are written. English for example is far easier with verbs and tenses

False, just like +Helado De Jazmines said, i could ask you a couple of things and you will stop saying that spanish is an easy language.. It's not regional pride, it's just a matter of comparison, for example verb conjugations in spanish are way more complicated than english' or russian's. I'm not saying spanish is hard but it's far from being "one of the easiest languages on earth".

I think english is way difficult than spanish, because even if in spanish you have to learn the gender of all stuff (that's a matter of getting use to it?)... but god, I still can't get how to use properly the verbs conjugations in english when talking or writing... in spanish you just have to change the way the verb ends depending the time (past, present, future) plus, in spanish you pronounce words as they're written... I still can't figure out how do you teach your children to read :/

Mhh... el español y el francés igual se parecen por lo que me he dado cuenta (hice el intento de aprender francés y lo deje por falta de tiempo), e igual he visto/escuchado distintos acentos en ingles... +singinaprilish El francés y el español tienen similitudes pero difieren significativamente en el tema de los acentos/tildes y su forma de escribirse, el español se habla tal como se escribe, el francés para nada, existen múltiples tildes y múltiples formas de escribir letras que suenan distinto al hablarlo.

It's not as easy as "changing the end of the words" (but english has those awful phrasal verbs! they are a pain in the ass to learn!). And I think it's easier to learn reading when you read exactly how it's written (learning english it's like you have to memorize how it's said and how it's written :/ )...

Si quieres hablar bien español, aprende el castellano de españa, el original xD. En los demas paises tienen sus propias variaciones de terminos, y sobretodo en centroamerica hay mucho "spanglish". Es como si quieres aprender ingles tienes que aprender primero el ingles mas conservador de inglaterra. Luego ya te intentaras adaptar a cada zona porque aunque se suponga que se habla el mismo idioma en X paises o zonas, lo mas probable es que siempre haya variaciones

No creo que el español de España sea el "buen español", eso es un pensamiento que quedó encallado en aquellos tiempos en que los españoles creían que los criollos hablaban su idioma mal. El mismo sentimiento que los ingleses tenían (y algunos tienen) con el inglés americano. Son variaciones de un mismo idioma. En España hay influencias celtas, íberas, árabes, francesas, portuguesas, y muchísimas más. En Hispanoamérica hay influencias de sus idiomas indígenas y de las zonas que los rodean, como Estados Unidos. ¿Quiere decir que el español de España es mejor español que todos los demás? No. Es el mismo idioma evolucionado de forma distinta, cada uno con su léxico peculiar, sus fonética propia y su gramática.

En mi OPINION, creo q el español es una de las lenguas más fáciles, ya sea en pronunciación o gramática. Cuando uno lee la palabra, la pronunciación no cambia. Si se lee "camote", suena "ca-mo-te". Las tildes tienen sus reglas ortográficas, por ejemplo, tilde no lleva tilde xq es una palabra grave. La gramática es mayormente muy regular. Entre las lenguas románticas creo q la más difícil es el francés, talvéz porque también tiene orígenes germánicos y celtas. Lenguas germánicas me parecen difíciles a comparación con las románticas. Las irregularidades del Inglés en su pronunciación y gramática lo hace difícil (me da pereza dar ejemplos). El Alemán también difícil x su pronunciación. Las lenguas más difíciles para mí son esas lenguas orientales, encabezando la lista están las lenguas chinas, pero cantonés es más difícil q el mandarín. El cantonés hablado no es igual q el cantonés escrito. Si digo algo en cantonés, no lo voy a leer o escribir a como lo dije. En cambio el mandarín sí. Y la escritura...DIOS MIO!!..no tanto por escribir los carácteres, pero memorizarse cada raya es un martirio y hay muchos q se parecen. Y cuando mi profesora de chino nos dice: "hay aproximadamente 90 mil carácteres en la escritura han-chino, pero con tal de que logren reconocer unos 3500, se podrán defender" O_o ...después, el vietnamita (no me gusta como suena) es también difícil, tailandés, árabe, coreano y japonés. Obviamente q hay muchísimas lenguas más pero solamente mencioné las q he aprendido o las q he tratado de aprender. Me gustan todas las lenguas excepto el vietnamita. :). Me fascinan inglés, español y chino mandarín con escritura tradicional.

Discrepo totalmente en que sea fácil...el español a nivel de términos,sinónimos,terminaciones verbales es muy difícil... claro que no se compara con el chino o el árabe,que son mucho más difíciles,pero hay mucha gente que quiere aprender español porque se habla en gran parte de la población mundial. Entonces,como lengua que puede tener utilidad verdadera,es difícil...el inglés es mucho más fácil y más aún el británico que es más conservador. Tenemos demasiadas variables en etimología y terminología,debido a las influencias propias de cada región.

Yo creo que efectivamente el español es más difícil que el inglés por que no lleva acentos, no se cambian las palabras por el género o bueno no tanto como en español, igual por la conjugación de los verbos, etc. Aunque ahora que quiero aprender ruso el inglés se me hace fácil.

Lo que sucede es que la conjugación de verbos es complicada, yo corro, ellos corren, nosotros corremos, etc allá es: I(yo) run she(ella) run we run, etc. Aparte de que como dice en la canción adonde vayas cambia la pronunciación

En centroamérica se habla español ._. De américa, sólo en Estados Unidos, Canadá y Brasil no se habla español.

+bh4713 No realmente. Hay otros países americanos en los que el español no es el idioma oficial. Además de Surinam, Guyana y Guayana Francesa (no independiente), hay otros en América Central que tienen otros idiomas. El único que conozco es Jamaica.

No actually this is not a big deal. They are just making fun of some differences in idiomatic usages. But in general you understand each other perfectly well. Go to China or India or that kind of super-big country you'll find people from different regions literally unable to understand each other. Si, precisamente, estas diferencias 1- lexicales (el cambio de significado, o el empleo de otras palabras), 2- sintácticas (la forma de redactar conjuntos de palabras) y 3- fonéticas (la diferente pronunciación de algunos fonemas) son llamadas diferencias dialectales.

Some understand the little Spanish I know, others look at me like I'm crazy! Because, just like your song illustrates, one word means one thing in one country, but something completely different in another! And people wonder why I'm having such a hard time learning Spanish! Hombre, nunca podrá compararse la cercanía de las dos variedades dialectales del alemán centroeuropeo (alemena y suiza) con las del castellano, ya que Alemanía y Suiza están pegadas geográficamente, y el español de Colombia dista muchos kilómetros del de Argentina, Guinea Ecuatorial, España o Filipinas. No es comparable.

Spanish, just like Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese or Cantonese, is a tonal language. Not only the vocabulary problem. We don't usually notice it, but it's much easier than most tonal languages. It's the second simplest tonal language, the first being Chinese and the third being Vietnamese (the most complex is Thai). Another reason Spanish tones go unnoticed is because it has 2 tones. In perspective: Chinese and Thai, 5 each; Vietnamese and Cantonese: 6 each

Sucede que el español es difícil no solo por lo regionalismos y las diferentes significados de palabras y frases, también por su gramática (conjugaciones, pronunciación, verbos, las tildes, etc.) sin hablar que hay dos tipos de español el de España y el de Latinoamerica (autentico los dos). Cabe aclarar que en España también tergiversan las palabras igual que en Latinoamerica (eso pasa en todos lados)

No no, el español no es difícil. Lo que sucede es que es deformado por la gente. En diferentes regiones le asignan significados a palabras que no corresponden. Creo que es el odioma más "manoseado" y mal hablado. El español de España es el auténtico, sucede que aquí, en sudamérica, le agregamos expresiones y cambiamos las cosas para hacerlo nuestro.

+BQuillaDood Wow! Por personas como tú, es que existen reglas de ortografía y luego hay problemas para entendernos entre diferentes paises de habla hispana. Es "Cójanla", "ningún", "así", "tomé", "veía", "discusión" y "ni siquiera". A mi me tomó tiempo poder leer tu comentario con tantas faltas de ortografía. Si existen es por algo, y no nada más existen en español, en cualquier idioma hay. El problema es que una palabra tiene diferente significado dependiendo del contexto, al menos en México pasa que incluso aquí mismo no podemos entendernos o tomamos las cosas a mal porque significan cosas diferentes. Por ejemplo, en algunas partes de México decirle a una mujer "flaca" significa que es de "complexión delgada", pero en otros lugares significa "prostituta". Es complicado entenderlo, pero así es. El español cambia dependiendo de la región. En inglés hay cosas que no existen en el diccionario americano, pero sí en el británico o en el Australiano. O en portugués, es bastante diferente como lo hablan en Portugal y en Brasil. O el chino, cambia dependiendo de la región en la que te encuentras dentro del mismo país. Si sigues sin entenderlo aún después de esto que te dije, es porque te falta algo de cultura. Te invito a leer, para que entiendas mejor las cosas. :)

Si no usáramos estas normas, la comunicación no podría ser efectiva. Por ejemplo estas palabras (la última puede ser una onomatopeya, la grafía de un sonido) “hay”, “ahí”, y “ay”. "Hay" de haber "Ahí" se refiere a lugar "Ay" es una exclamación "Hay dos cosas que no he dicho" "Ahí, ese es el párrafo; la parte principal de nuestra discusión" "¡Ay! olvidé mi identificación" Y si no entiendes este español básico, busca allí en tu casa un diccionario.

+BQuillaDood ¿Para qué las tildes? Simplemente para darle sentido a las cosas. Saber en qué tiempo estás hablando. Por ejemplo, no es lo mismo "tome" que "tomé", o "si" a "sí". Si para ti significan lo mismo es porque necesitas tomar unas clases de gramática y ortografía, de esas clases que dan en la primaria...

I'm a native Spanish speaker and I always found English to be pretty easy given that it has no genders, the verbs tenses aren't anywhere close to the amount of tenses that Spanish has; it has no ser and estar, just "to be" for them both. The hardest is the pronunciation for sure, but in my own opinion (having studied German, French, English and some Chinese), English is quite easy, and German is just hell, because it's a gender based language, with different verb conjugations, etc. Some people think Spanish is very easy because of the pronunciation, and because it's a language that seems easy in the beginning, but the more you study it, the harder it gets, which doesn't happen with other languages where the learning curve is steep, but once you get a grasp on it, it becomes easier.

+Jimena Ríos I might have to disagree with you about English being easier than Spanish. I am a American who has learned Spanish, and I have been speaking it for more than 15 years. To some dominant Spanish speaking people, I have asked some of them why they haven't learned English. Many have told me the same thing; for them English is hard because it isn't pronounced the way it's written all time. After comparing the 2 languages for some time now, I realized that they are right. I know how to correctly write over 90% of my Spanish ( with accent marks and everything ), and even though I am a English speaking American, I cannot say that I write my English as well.

The pronunciation it's the hard part, I've been learning English for 12 years but the chances that I have in order to practice my pronunciation are minimum :( I consider that easy part of English are the words like, for example, "walk" that can use as a noun or as a verb, but in Spanish the word changes.

I was referring to grammar, not dialectical differences. In terms of actually learning the language, spanish is a PIECE OF CAKE compared to Croatian. In regards to dialects/regional languages: Croatia has three main languages(officially counted as dialects but they are separate languages): štokavian, čakavian, and kajkavian. I myself speak štokavian and kajkavian, kajkavian is more like slovene than it is the other south slavic languages. There are 7 cases in štokavian (6 in kajkavian), 3 genders (in all three), different declension patterns for all of them, and completely different words in all three for most things (čakavian's words largely are influenced by latin languages, like Dalmatian, Istriot, Italian, and Venetian, kajkavian's come from German and Hungarian (another hard as FUCK language, multitudes harder than spanish), and štokavian's come from Turkish, Greek, staroslovenski, german, and many others.) There are also structural differences in the way verbs work, the way certain sounds change, and all of that. Spanish and its dialectical differences both 1. do not compare to croatian, at least hispanoablantes can understand eachother, the different croatian dialect/languages can't, 2. are easy as getting down an accent and vocabulary, whereas croatian you actually have to study different grammar, vocabulary, pronunciations, etc. Just because croatia's "small" doesn't mean that it lacks insane linguistic diversity.

Very informative, thanks for the reply, I learned something new. As you pointed out I didn't take in account the grammar part. I understand pretty well the dialects in a country. In Belgium for example we have got 3 different official languages: Flemish, French and German, each one having having their respective dialect/language. In Spain is the same case with each different region, Galician is way different than Vasque and Catalan. Now in Mexico we have got 68 spoken languages, not dialects, each one also having a very different grammar and everything, Nahuatl being the most spoken, nothing similar to the Spanish languages; and the same applies with with all the countries in Latin American, with their respective local languages. So if by "Croatian" you mean all the locally spoken languages in Croatia, I'd say speaking "Mexican" is rather impossible. About the grammar part, I can confirm anglo-saxon languages are very complex in their grammatical structure, myself being fluent German speaker, Spanish is a very easy language to learn grammatically speaking.

This video is comedy, it isn't really difficult to learn spanish because pronounciation is based on the written word therefore is much simpler than pronouncing English based on written English. this is because, with few exceptions, each letter in the Spanish alphabet represents a single sound. In contrast, many similar sounds are represented by different letters and letter combinations in English ex: UNcomfortable - ANcestor, Blood- Blanket, Women- Wind, etc. In short words: English is a mess.

Case in point: pronunciation has very little to do with pronouns. Next, un- and an- do not sound similar. None of your examples do. What you could have said instead is that English is an opaque language: the spelling gives very few cues as to how words are actually pronounced. But most of the time it doesn't really ever go any further than lime/lemon. I speak spanish perfectly, and I must admit, it makes little to no sense at all. It's something you need to learn practically. It's an inconsistent language from region to region.

+hecky pls I'd disagree. Try using "pants" or "fanny" in the wrong country in the wrong content. Pronunciation differences in English are more important - vowel sounds differ a lot even among educated people from different regions of Britain, Australia, Canada, Ireland, the USA etc.

It seems that English regional variations are more pronounced in phonology (pronunciation), while Spanish regional variations have a higher degree of semantic diversity (word meaning). Which to me makes sense because of the history of development of the two languages: different variations of English came to be when speakers of English settled in new lands and continued their linguistic traditions, but Spanish was a learned language for the majority of the population in the Americas, so that might account for the semantic variability. That, and the fact that there is no single Latin American prestige dialect to level the differences. On the other hand, English is influenced by 2 major centres: the US and the UK. Most of the differences in pronunciation are either common phonological shifts (t-flapping in American English vs t-glottalization in UK English) or appear in vowels. The vowel system of English is quite complex and is thus subject to considerable change from dialect to dialect, especially in comparison with the 5-vowel Spanish system, which is, unsurprisingly, much more stable.

Nadie te ha censurado, sólo te he corregido porque creo que tengo más experiencia aprendiendo idiomas y el inglés tiene una dificultad muy baja comparado con prácticamente cualquier otro idioma (el vocabulario nunca es una dificultad, sino cuestión de tiempo). Si eres tan inseguro como para tomarte una corrección como una ofensa personal y saltar como una loca, es un problema psicológico tuyo. Hala, a seguir exponiendo con orgullo tu ignorancia por ahí. Tú no escuches, que así aprenderás mucho.

English actually is a superb example of that From my point of view there are hardships enough for an English learner to cope with to match with those of Spanish. Educación no es llamar payaso al primero que te lleva la contraria y hiere tu frágil ego de niñato. Y si no eres capaz de entender conceptos extremadamente sencillos (o decir cosas como que los verbos no tienen que ver con la gramática) no soy el culpable. And yes, English phonetics are a BIG one The listening may be a maddening quest for learners since 80% English words consist of fleeting monosyllables(much of them pronounced = or alike) To make things worse,English vocabulary is dizzily huge- full of homonyms & synonyms. After all that, the Spanish verb forms are a joke

Heh, don't worry about your spanish, spanish has been my first language for about 14 years (Without including the time it took me to learn it after I was born XD) and I still make a lot of mistakes mostly on punctuation and spelling (damn accents XD), and I've seen many people in my school that have more trouble dealing with them... Still its nice to see you are still trying to learn it despite the difficulties you've faced, believe me, you'll improve in no time!

English grammar is easier for a Spanish speaker, since Spanish grammar is more complex than English' (e.g. verbs or the subjunctive). The difficulty for a Spanish speaker lies mainly in the phonetics of the English language. More complex grammars, like German's, are much harder for both Spanish and English people. It has declinations plus three genders and non-regular plurals. If you find difficult paying attention to genders while using adjectives, try paying additional attention to cases :D

Eso hace al Español, sin exagerar, imposible de aprender por completo. Tomando la definición "completo" como la unión de todas formas del idioma, sabemos que la conjugación de verbos no es nada fácil, por no decir que es muy compleja, dada la diversidad de maneras de la conjugación; lo coloquial, uniéndose a lo formal, hace que el Español sea uno de los idiomas más "complejo" con el que un extranjero se pueda encontrar. No obstante la claridad de la pronunciación lo hace un poco más fácil

Hi guy!Thanks for your kind remark!To tell you the truth I´m not confident yet when writing at all -always wondering how many blunders I´ve done and hoping that a charitable soul would correct me. I undertook this monstrous quest to learn Enlish 2 and a half months ago since an accident left me with nothing to do but staying at home (that´s temporal). A aprender algun idioma es dificilismo. Ingles es mi primer idioma y tengo muchas problemas con espanol. Estare de acuerdo que ingles tiene mas palabras (MUCHO mas) pero lo mas no tienes que saber. Mientras espanol tiene menos, la gramatica es tan dificil :/ Pero, estoy seguro que puedes decir lo mismo sobre ingles. Como aprendiste nuestro idioma tan bien? Tu vocabulario es perfecto! Es evidente que no sabes de lo que hablas. Tu no usaste ninguna palabra poco frecuente en tus comentarios, simplemente no tienes habilidad para expresar ideas de forma concisa y recargas demasiado el contenido con el único objeto de demostrar patéticamente algo que no eres. Evidentemente no puedes estar convencido y jamás lo estarás de algo que no has experimentado y no tienes ni zorra. De todas formas se han llevado a cabo muchos estudios rigurosos que clasifican los idiomas según su dificultad y el Inglés siempre consta entre los 10 primeros mientras que el Español no. Es su alta flexibilidad y la fluidez en el uso de los tiempos verbales lo que lo convierte en un idioma que permite una comunicación decente sin llegar a un alto nivel de conocimiento.

Exacto mejor definicion no pude encontrar en los comentarios :) en si no es que sea tan dificil el español y es como mencionas "lo coloquial" con lo que se topa la gente es con los modismos que hay en cada pais pero tanto se puede decir el modismo como la palabra correcta mas que nada seria mas dificil de parte de alguien extrangero el entender a otra persona en vez de comunicarse ya que al entender si seria un problema la palabra con el modismo :) Saludos.

Nice song! The "nice comments" between jose and santias are also great. My personal opinion.. Spanish is more difficult than English especially in all the verbs tenses but English is tougher on pronunciation since there are not rules that can always be applied like Spanish

Lo que usas es una paráfrasis, decir "abrumadoramente" es un cambio brusco a lo que expresé inicialmente. Aprende Inglés. Manejas datos, pero no el idioma ;) ¿No es tan fácil? I really appreciate you´ve had fun at our preposterous quarrel´s expense, for I must admit that´s just helping spoiling the party. I'm too worn out to go any further with this but perhaps the very truth is that our biased opinion cannot count at all. Anyway It´s undeniable English´s vocabulary is far vaster than Spanish´s and this fact doesn´t ease the winding path to learn it.

Pero en lo que mencionas del ingles las palabras no son aplicadas frcuentemente es como todo el español no es tan dificil simplemente que con lo que ellos se toparon fue con los modismos de cada pais por eso la discrepancia pero ninguna palabra aplicada en el ingles es reconocida del idioma es lo mismo que estar diciendo OK, Good, Nice y demas cosas en un pais de habla hispana

A por cierto, tu crees que no me doy cuenta pero, tu escritura en Inglés no es que sea incorrecta, pero se nota que es bastante insegura y forzada: Nadie con un buen dominio del Inglés escribiría así.
